Update from our International Student Recruitment Team

The International Student Recruitment team, including our two offshore offices in India and China, continues to work collaboratively with colleagues across campus to help forge strong partnerships with institutions, agents and counsellors throughout the world. Over the course of the year, we delivered over 500 activities spanning more than 40 countries. These included overseas visits, school and university presentations, in-country alumni and student networking events, student panel discussions, online chats and our global webinar series.

These engagements were informed by a strategic and data-driven approach and a commitment to provide the highest levels of service to international students and overseas partners.  This enabled the team to build key relationships, bridge geographical gaps and showcase the vibrant community spirit that defines our university.

In June, we welcomed 30 international recruitment agents from 16 countries across the world onto campus for our University of Bath Agents Conference. This hugely successful event allowed us to showcase University developments, share insights and build relationships with our network of influential international advisers.

Our commitment to enhancing our partnerships and sharing best practice with our community of agents and counsellors was further strengthened through our pledge to the principles of the new national Agent Quality Framework, and our ongoing work to ensure the University meets all of its responsibilities and works with international agents in a clear, consistent and mutually beneficial way.

For 2024 entry, the University launched new Master's scholarships for students from India and Faculty Merit Awards for students from 20 countries across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, South, South-East and East Asia, North and South America.  A number of these scholarships were targeted at specific international markets, with the aim of encouraging academic excellence and and supporting the brightest and best students to come to Bath.  The University also came together to celebrate our successful scholars at our Annual Scholars' Reception at the Roman Baths in November.

In August 2024, the team delivered the International Summer School, an opportunity for international students to engage in academic activity on a virtual basis, meet with current Bath students and gain insights into the study experience at Bath. The Summer School, which covered five subject streams, received positive feedback from attendees, with many applauding the University’s innovative offer of a guaranteed conditional offer for those who complete the programme successfully.

In a challenging year for international student recruitment sector-wide, the University achieved a number of notable successes. At Undergraduate level, international new enrols grew 10%, with increases from markets including Singapore and United Arab Emirates, as well as growth amongst UK-based international students. At Postgraduate Taught level, an overall decline in new enrols of 5% was fuelled largely by a 39% decline in the India market (a market trend experienced sector-wide and not unique to Bath). This masked growth in other markets, including increases of 30% and 26% from China and Thailand respectively.

In a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive landscape for international recruitment, the recruitment team has worked closely with colleagues across all three Faculties and the School of Management, to identify new opportunities and mitigate risks. The team will continue to work in collaboration with all relevant partners to ensure the University is best placed to meet its international recruitment objectives.
