FOR BUSINESSES

The University supports businesses to grow and expand. It does this through consultancy, contract research, and facilities hire.

We provide state-of-the-art facilities and experienced technical staff for businesses to deliver commercial projects, including the propulsion systems institute IAAPS, and the Centre for the Analysis for Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA).

Our innovative institutes help businesses develop new technologies and processes. These include iCAST - the Innovation Centre for Applied Sustainable Technologies - which focuses on green innovation, and the Institute for Mathematical Innovation, which delivers multi-disciplinary and mathematically grounded research to address real-world, societal, and industrial challenges.

The University of Bath also offers knowledge transfer partnerships (KTPs) to business. These initiatives aim to improve businesses’ productivity by creating a partnership between them, an academic or research organisation, and a graduate. It was estimated that KTP activity generated £5 million GVA across the economy of the UK in 2019/20 and supported 110 jobs (BIGGAR Economics ‘University of Bath Economic Impact Assessment Report’ assessing economic impact in 2019/20).

FOR RESEARCHERS

The University provides resources and support for researchers to launch new enterprises and commercialise their research through its Research and Innovation Services department.

The department provides information and resources, access to state-of-the-art facilities, funding opportunities, research networks, access to local and regional businesses, and professional development programmes.

They help staff engage with businesses through a dedicated Knowledge Transfer team, support staff with protecting intellectual property, and guide academics through the research commercialisation process with a dedicated Technology Transfer team.

Our monthly Ignite Plus event series provides researchers with information linked to Knowledge Exchange activity and offers perspectives from academics about their experiences of working with industry.

FOR STUDENTS

Enterprise Bath is a University department that offers advice, business mentors, competitions, masterclasses, talks from expert guest speakers, placements, and networking opportunities.

The key programmes for Enterprise Bath include the Dragons’ Den pitching competition (where students can pitch for investment from an alumni panel), and the Alumni Innovation Award (where graduates are given a grant and support to develop their ideas into viable businesses). For those students who have a fully formed business plan they can spend their placement year developing their startup with support from Enterprise Bath.
